5 Reasons to Move to New York’s Upper East Side

Apartments New York's Upper East SideIf you are new to Manhattan or thinking about moving to a new neighborhood, the Upper East Side is a great place to consider. Located from 96th Street to 59th Street and between 5th Avenue / Central Park and the East River, here’s just a taste of what the neighborhood has to offer.

1. There’s something for many budgets

Amid the upscale real estate, prep schools, and high-end boutiques and restaurants, it’s possible to find pockets of affordable apartments in this tastefully placid community. The Upper East Side is family oriented, and the residents are made up of many lifelong Manhattanites. Lately the young-professional crowd has been moving in, drawn to the culture and atmosphere.

Overall, the median home value is $1,230,893 and the median rent is $2,197. Having said that, the New York Times reports that a typical two-bedroom home in the Upper East Side sells for $2.01 million. So, the cost of a multi-bedroom family home will be higher than average. If you need to keep rent or mortgage costs down, try looking east of Lexington Avenue.

2. It’s easy to get around town

The biggest transportation news for  the Upper East Side is the Second Ave Subway, also known as the Q Train. The first phase of this line officially opened for use on January 1, 2017, with three stations along the Upper East Side. It relieves the conditions on the Lexington Avenue line (the 4,5, and 6 trains). Additional phases will eventually run to Houston Street and the Financial District.

Otherwise, as mentioned, the 4,5, and 6 trains run along Lexington Avenue and are the primary means of subway transportation.

Not a fan of the subway? There are plenty of buses available – both crosstown, local, and express. See the MTA bus schedule for more detailed information.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that the Upper East Side’s proximity to the FDR Drive makes it an easy drive throughout the city and an easy way to get into and out of Manhattan.

3. Cultural Attractions

Along Fifth Avenue in the 80’s, you’ll find Museum Mile. It’s an amazing collection of some of the world’s greatest museums: the Guggenheim and Metropolitan Museum of Art being the two best known.

And if museums are your thing, you can’t miss the annual Museum Mile Festival in June, or as it’s touted, “New York’s biggest block party. This year it’s being held on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 from 6 PM to 9 PM. The streets are closed to cars, and museum admission is free! There are also children’s activities, troubadours, bands, and other street performers.

Central Park is what brings many residents uptown in New York. East Siders have easy access to the Summer Stage and the Zoo, to name a few attractions.

4. Top Notch Healthcare

Naturally in Manhattan you expect the best possible healthcare. It’s easy to get to a doctor or hospital on the Upper East Side if you’re ill or injured. Three highly-respected hospitals are in the neighborhood:

  • NewYork Presbyterian Hospital was rated #1 by US News & World Report’s annual ranking. It’s a comprehensive facility that also offers NewYork Presbyterian Physician Services for coordinated health care.
  •  The Hospital for Special Surgery is known worldwide for its orthopedic services. It also provides medical specialties in everything from neurology to foot and ankle services.
  • Lenox hill Hospital is a member of the esteemed Northwell Health group. They are known for excellence in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, head and neck surgery, and maternal/child care.

5. Food & Entertainment

As you look through the top-rated places to eat, know that there are great restaurants in the local museums – in particular, the Flora Bar in the Met Breuer and Russ & Daughters at the Jewish Museum. Here are some lists from which you can pick your favorite:
