Packing Tips for a New York City Move

NYC Moving Tips

Moving is stressful for most people. It can be both physically and emotionally demanding, and there is nothing more challenging than trying to stuff all of your belongings into boxes without breaking anything, and then trying to unpack and make sense of it all again when you reach your destination.  NYC packers and movers have tricks that make the entire packing experience move along at a steady, manageable pace and make it easier to find the things you need once you get to your new home. Here are some easy suggestions from New York’s Serenity Movers that will help make your moving experience less of a hassle:

Plan how much time you’ll need for packing and unpacking

How much packing time will you need? Consider your daily schedule, the size of your home, and how much help you’ll have (it’s a great time to call in favors from family and friends).

If you only have the time and resources to pack a few boxes a day, packing will take weeks – get an early start! As soon as your move is confirmed, begin packing up items you won’t need, such as decorative items, off-season clothing or sports materials, knicknacks, books, and toys/games.

Decide if you’ll need to put items into storage

If you’re downsizing, you may have too many belongings to bring into your new City apartment. Storage is a great way to care for items you can’t permanently let go. Determine what you’ll store before you begin packing.

When you are preparing belongings for storage, be sure to wrap and pack them in the correct boxes to prevent breakage and damage during the move and in the storage facility. Be sure to group items and label boxes for easy retrieval. Think about packing off-season summer clothing that will be in storage for the duration of a New York City winter. You sure will be anxious to get into warm-weather clothes when spring arrives. Make sure items are easy to find and in great condition. Use good quality packing materials

Don’t skimp or try to cut corners with cheap packing materials – boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape are what will keep your possessions safe during the move. It pays to invest in sturdy moving boxes for all fragile packing. If you’re moving in the city, most New York City moves involve hazards like stairways and freight elevators, so saving a few dollars on packing materials now can lead to costly damage in the long run.

Stay organized!

If you plan and organize your time well, you won’t be tossing items into random boxes on moving-day morning. Knowing what’s in each box is a lifesaver. Be sure to use packing labels that indicate the room in which the items belong, and if you don’t anticipate you’ll be able to unpack immediately, include an inventory of contents on the outside of the box. Pack room-by-room to keep boxes organized. You will truly appreciate these organization tips when you’re unpacking.

Find out what is and is not allowed on the moving van

You may not realize this, but there are many items that are not allowed in a moving truck. This is for the safety of the movers as well as the welfare of your possessions. Items that generally can’t be transported on the moving van include:

  • Perishable items – produce, frozen or refrigerated foods, open food containers. (Your moving company may make some exceptions for local moves.)
  • Aerosols
  • Solvents
  • Nail polish remover
  • Oxygen bottles
  • Fireworks
  • Ammunition and loaded guns
  • Cleaning products
  • Car batteries
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Pesticides
  • Other hazardous, toxic or flammable items

The best packing and moving companies know what can and cannot be packed. They will give you a list of un-allowed items in advance and ask you to either dispose of or move these items on your own.

Plan what needs to be in your “Open First” box
