Check to see if everything is working

One of the first things to do on move-in day, is to check if everything is working. Hopefully, your landlord was able to make sure everything was in perfect working order before you moved in. But it doesn’t hurt to double check. Make sure all of your light switches and appliances, such as your stove and shower are working properly. You don’t want to spend the whole day unpacking and be stuck taking an ice cold shower at the end of it all.

Get a moving company and give your movers some credit!

Hire someone to carry your boxes!

Getting a moving company in NYC is very important, especially if you want to have the most smooth experience possible, especially if you need office movers. Before you hire your moving company, make sure you weigh out all of your options before you commit, and make sure you have a price guarantee. But it’s also important to give your movers some credit. Your movers work extremely hard and moving in NYC  is especially tough. So why not show them your appreciation for them? Maybe get some snacks and cold drinks to give them during the move. At the end of their job make sure you give them some compliments.  It can’t hurt to be more accommodating to the people helping you and at the very least you’ll make them feel appreciated. Which is always nice, especially after a hard day’s work. Another question people have is how much to tips movers in NYC. Check out our guide to tipping movers in NYC.

Clean up a bit

Again, I hope your landlord took care of everything before you moved in and took the liberty to have your apartment cleaned up. But it doesn’t hurt to clean a little more right? Try disinfecting the door knobs and toilet seats. Look through every nook and cranny to see if there is anything less than desirable. It’ll give you some peace of mind, and make the place seem more like home. We also understand that moving is very time-consuming and tiring endeavor. If you feel like you’re too tired to start cleaning everything, maybe hire a cleaning service

Set up your bed

One of the things to do on move-in day, make your bed! This is super important, because no matter how much you get done today, it’ll all be so much less rewarding if your mattress isn’t at least setup. After a long and tiring day, all you’re gonna want to do is crash on a nice comfy bed. So make it a priority to set up your bed before you get too tired. You’ll thank yourself later!

If you have kids, try and set up their rooms first

Keep your kids entertained!

If you have kids, you’re gonna want to try and make them somewhat comfortable while you’re working on getting your new place together. Set up their bed and other essentials before you get to your owns. If you can, try and set it up in a similar way to your old place. It’ll give the kids a sense of home in the new apartment, making them more comfortable, and ultimately saving you some stress. If possible, try and set up the TV as soon as possible with any video game consoles you might already have, it’ll keep them busy while you work at trying to unpack everything.

Try and get other furniture in place

Piggybacking off the last point, you should try and get some other big pieces of furniture set up, such as a couch or dining table. It can start to making the apartment more functional right off the bat, and will make you a little more comfortable in the days to come with some basic furniture set up.

Get your every-day items in order

The first day moving in is always a strange transition day, so you should try getting back to a normal of a routine as possible by setting up your stuff you use every day. Toiletries, cooking ware, and clothes all fit this “every-day item” criteria. It’ll also save you some unnecessary stress if you have them all out at once. You don’t want to be just ready to go to bed and then realize your toothbrush and toothpaste is stuffed away in some box you haven’t touched yet.

Try and get rid of some moving trash

Your brand new apartment is cluttered with a bunch of moving crap. There’s ripped up boxes, crumpled up newspaper, tangled tape and packing peanuts everywhere. So whenever you get the chance, take all of that outside the apartment and throw it away sooner rather than later. Your place won’t be as cluttered, and it’ll make the place feel less chaotic and packed up.

Get some good local food

The last thing you’d want to do after a long day of moving and unpacking is to cook yourself a meal. So go out and try one of the good local restaurants, it’ll give you a better introduction to the neighborhood, and you won’t have to add dirty dishes to your laundry list of things to do today.

Enjoy it!
