What should you do with the bills?
Are you moving in NYC? Are you having trouble figuring out how to deal with your bills? Have you never set up utilities in a new home before? It can be tough, and stressful to deal with a number of different companies. Especially when you are working on trying to pack up your belongings and move to a new home. Here is the answer as what should you do with the bills!
It’s good to stay in contact with these companies as early as possible. This will ensure that everything is taken care of on time. You should at the very latest, start 4 weeks before the move-in day and get in contact with your current employer, as well as go around telling your family and have them change that information for their own needs. The last thing you want is for your family to send a holiday card and having it end up at your old address.
You should also change any subscriptions you may have, like if you have the New York Times delivered to your home, you should arrange with them the new address you want it sent to. To learn more about when you should move, check out our timeline to a successful move. We go into full detail, week by week, as to what you should do each week.
At this point, you should start reaching out to EVERYBODY. Start with the DMV, as they need to know your new address change for your updated license. Reach out to your bank, your doctors, your lawyers. It would be very useful for their records to have your new address on file. This is also a good time to reach out to your insurance companies. They would need to know about your move as well. Contact USPS and submit and address change form.
After you contact all of your major companies or people that need your address, it’s time reach out to the utility companies! Talk to your electric, gas, water, and cable providers. Make sure that you send them the new address, and to only have your old home’s utilities shut off after the day you move, and to make sure the utilities are working in your new home on the day you move in.
