NYC Furniture Removal & Disposal
Furniture Disposal NYC — Removal, Donation & Clearouts
Licensed furniture removal across NYC — same-day with your move or standalone. Here's what we take, NYC disposal rules you need to know, and where donated furniture goes.
What furniture disposal services does Serenity Movers offer?
We remove, donate, and responsibly dispose of unwanted furniture and household items — either on the same day as your move or as a standalone appointment.
What furniture and items can be disposed of?
- Sofas, sectionals, and upholstered furniture
- Mattresses and bed frames
- Dining tables, chairs, and desks
- Dressers, wardrobes, and shelving units
- Appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers — with Freon removal coordination)
- Rugs and carpeting
- Lamps, mirrors, and décor
- Boxes, packing materials, and miscellaneous household items
Items we cannot remove: Hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, propane), medical waste, and items containing asbestos or lead paint (common in pre-1978 NYC buildings — these require licensed abatement contractors, not movers).
NYC furniture disposal rules — what you need to know
- You cannot leave large furniture on the sidewalk without notification: NYC requires residents to schedule bulk item pickup through the Sanitation Department (nyc.gov/sanitation) or use a licensed removal service. Unlicensed sidewalk dumping carries fines of up to $300 per item. Serenity Movers is a licensed removal service — we handle disposal correctly so you don’t face fines.
- Mattress disposal requires a bag: NYC law requires mattresses to be sealed in a plastic bag before being placed for disposal. Our team handles this during removal.
- Donation is always the first option for usable items: Before anything goes to disposal, we assess whether it’s in a condition to donate. NYC has a strong network of furniture donation organizations, and a usable sofa going to a family in need is always better than a landfill trip.
- Building rules for large item removal: Most NYC apartment buildings require large items to be removed via the service entrance and may require scheduling with building management. We coordinate this the same way we coordinate a move — in advance, with the right documentation.
Where does donated NYC furniture go?
Furniture in good condition is routed to partnered organizations including:
- Housing Works (furniture resale that funds HIV/AIDS services)
- Salvation Army NYC drop-off and pickup programs
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations in the NYC metro area
- Local mutual aid networks and community organizations
Donation routing depends on condition, item type, and pickup availability at the time of your removal. We cannot guarantee donation for every piece — items that cannot be donated are recycled or disposed of responsibly.
Frequently asked questions about furniture disposal in NYC
How much does furniture disposal cost in NYC?
Disposal pricing depends on the number of items and whether removal is standalone or combined with a move. A single sofa or bed frame standalone removal typically starts at $150–$250. Full apartment clearouts are quoted based on volume. When added to a residential move, disposal of a few items is often included or minimally priced as an add-on. Get a quote at (877) 887-1818.
Can you remove furniture from a building that requires a COI?
Yes — Serenity Movers provides a COI with every service including standalone furniture removal. We submit it to your building management within 24 hours of booking and coordinate service entrance access the same way we do for a full move.
Can you remove a refrigerator or air conditioner?
Yes, with coordination. Refrigerators and air conditioners contain refrigerants (Freon) that require licensed removal by an EPA-certified technician before the appliance can be disposed of. We coordinate with a certified technician as part of the removal process. This adds lead time — let us know about appliances when you book so we can schedule accordingly.
Will you take everything in an apartment for an estate clearout?
Yes — full estate and apartment clearouts are one of our disposal specialties. We remove everything, sort into donation, recycling, and disposal streams, and leave the apartment completely empty and broom-clean. This service is commonly used by estate executors, families handling a parent’s belongings, or landlords preparing a unit for renovation. Call (877) 887-1818 to discuss your specific situation.
