The Complete NYC Moving Timeline: How to Handle Your Move
A successful NYC move is all about timing. Miss a key step and you might find yourself without an elevator reservation, missing COI, or parking tickets on moving day. This timeline keeps everything on track.
2 Months Before Moving Day
- Confirm your move-out date and give written notice to your current landlord
- Begin researching moving companies — check reviews, licensing, and insurance
- Get at least 3 in-home or video estimates from licensed NYC movers
- Start decluttering — hold a sale, donate, or discard unused items
- Research your new neighborhood: transit, schools, services, grocery stores
- Order packing supplies in bulk (it’s cheaper and you’ll use more than you think)
6–8 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Book your moving company — confirm all details in writing
- Reserve the freight elevator at both buildings
- Obtain COI requirements from both buildings; forward to your moving company
- Schedule disconnection of utilities at your current address
- Set up new utilities: electricity, gas, internet at your new address
- Begin packing non-essential items: off-season clothes, books, decorations
4 Weeks Before Moving Day
- File USPS mail forwarding request (takes up to 2 weeks to activate)
- Update address with bank, employer, insurance companies, and subscriptions
- Pack the majority of your belongings, leaving only daily-use items out
- Arrange childcare and/or pet care for moving day
- Confirm parking permit with your movers (requires 72-hour advance posting)
- Photograph all furniture and valuables for insurance documentation
1–2 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Confirm all move details with your moving company (arrival time, crew size, truck size)
- Confirm COI has been approved by both buildings
- Defrost and clean your refrigerator
- Finish all packing except your overnight essentials
- Prepare cash for movers’ tips (standard in NYC: $20–50 per mover)
- Confirm elevator times and building access with both supers
Moving Day
- Be awake and ready before your crew arrives
- Do a final sweep of every room, closet, cabinet, and storage area before movers leave
- Photograph your old apartment — walls, floors, and fixtures — before leaving
- Return all keys and fobs to your superintendent or landlord
- Be at your new apartment to direct placement of furniture and boxes
- Inspect items as they come off the truck — note any damage immediately
- Tip your crew and leave a review online if the service was excellent
First Week After Moving
- Update your NY State driver’s license within 10 days of moving (required by law)
- Register your vehicle at your new address within 30 days
- Update voter registration
- Submit your security deposit claim form to your old landlord
- Set up renter’s insurance at your new address if you don’t already have it
- Explore your new neighborhood — find the subway entrances, local spots, and essential services
