10 Essential Moving Tips for NYC Residents

Maxwell · 27 years experience 3 min read

Starting a new NYC adventure? Here are ten essential tips for making your move smooth, efficient, and stress-free — straight from the pros who have handled thousands of NYC moves since 1999.

1. Book Your Move Early

NYC movers book up fast, especially during peak season (May–September) and at month-end. Reserve your moving company at least 4–6 weeks in advance. For summer moves or end-of-month dates, aim for 8 weeks out. The best crews fill up first.

2. Check Building Requirements

Most NYC buildings require a Certificate of Insurance (COI) from your moving company naming the building as additionally insured. Get your building’s specific COI requirements and send them to your movers at least 2 weeks before your move date.

  • Minimum liability coverage amounts
  • Building management company name and address
  • Elevator reservation window and fees
  • Freight entrance location and hours

3. Measure Everything

NYC apartments have notoriously narrow hallways, tight stairwells, and small elevators. Measure your furniture and your new apartment’s doorways, hallways, and elevator before moving day. A sofa that fit perfectly in your last place might not make it through a 28-inch doorway.

4. Get Parking Permits

Your movers will need to park their truck near your building. In NYC, this typically requires a No Parking sign posted 72 hours in advance. A professional moving company handles this — but confirm it’s included in your service before the move.

5. Declutter Before You Pack

Moving is the perfect opportunity to lighten your load. Donate, sell, or discard anything you haven’t used in over a year. Less stuff means fewer boxes, lower moving costs, and a cleaner start in your new home. NYC has plenty of donation centers and Buy Nothing Facebook groups.

6. Pack an Essentials Box

Pack a separate bag or box with everything you’ll need on your first night: phone charger, toiletries, change of clothes, medications, snacks, paper plates, and bedding. Keep it with you — not on the truck — so it’s instantly accessible when you arrive.

7. Label Everything

Label every box on the top and at least one side with its contents and destination room. Use a color-coded system with different tape colors per room. This saves enormous time when unloading and helps you prioritize which boxes to open first.

8. Protect Floors and Walls

Your building may require floor and wall protection during the move. Even if not required, protecting hardwood floors with floor runners and doorways with cardboard corner guards prevents security deposit deductions and keeps your new place looking pristine from day one.

9. Plan for Delays

NYC traffic, elevator wait times, and unexpected building complications can all add time to your move. Build a 2-hour buffer into your schedule and confirm elevator reservation windows with both your old and new buildings. Always have your super’s cell number handy.

10. Update Your Address

File a USPS mail forwarding request at least a week before your move. Then update your driver’s license, bank accounts, credit cards, insurance policies, subscriptions, and any government registrations. Keep a running list — there are always a few you’ll forget.

Follow these tips and your NYC move will go smoother than you expected. And of course, having the right moving team makes all the difference — Serenity Movers has been making NYC moves seamless since 1999.
